Christmas Eve
In Poland Christmas Eve (Wigilia – The Vigil) is the most important day of Christmas. In keeping with this tradition the Polish diaspora, in general, celebrate as in Poland.
It is a day of fasting when no meat is eaten. Fish, most often fried in breadcrumbs, is served. It is traditionally considered inappropriate to eat meat, considering the importance of how animals and people once came together on this day. Catholics in Poland do not actually need to observe this fast as an obligation, since this direction, specific to Christmas Eve does not exist in the Catholic canons. However, due to tradition in Poland, this fast is generally still observed by Catholics, Protestants and by other Christian denominations in Poland.
